Of all the many fond memories I have with Dadu - my favourite is probably when I started talking to him every day in the morning. Our daily morning chats started around 1-2 months after Ma had passed away. I used to think I was trying to be there for him but only realised much later that it was he who was always there for me.
We had this un-said understanding that if I didn’t call him by 8.30; he would call me by 8.35. We’d talk about everything that we both loved - law, politics, finance, business matters, family members and every Rungta’s favourite: “how was the morning motion?” – because that truly defined how the rest of our day would turn out.
I got to know a side of him that I don’t think many have ever seen. He missed Ma dearly, more than any of us can fathom and not a day went by that he didn’t ask about dad’s health. I realized that he loved his children dearly even if he wasn’t able to say it to them.
Dadu left us in 2015, but every quiet morning still reminds me of his steady voice on the line - and of the comfort he gave me, without even trying.
